OSHA Partnership
Brazos Masonry, Inc. has signed a partnership agreement with OSHA through the San Antonio Mason Contractors Association (SAMCA). The goals of this partnership are to develop contractor/government relationships. While Brazos Masonry, Inc.’s safety policies already exceed OSHA minimum standards, we hope that the OSHA inspections and communication developed through this partnership will work to improve our safety and health performance. We turn in a monthly report to OSHA focusing on the four major hazards (falls, electrical, caught in-between and struck-by hazards), which account for the majority of fatalities and injuries in the construction industry.

Safety at Brazos Masonry, Inc. is not a goal, it is a journey! We will never get to a point where “we have arrived” or where there is no more room for improvement. We have made many changes since our inception and will continue to do so in order to build a culture of safety on our projects.

Congratulations to Roger Lopez!
2007 Best Safety Record Grand Prize Winner $10,000

Part of our journey in safety is to continue improving the Policy and Procedure component of safety, which is absolutely necessary. The second part of our safety journey is to instill safety into the hearts of our employees. We work toward this by showing true concern for the well being of our employees. Weekly newsletters recognizing a “Safe Employee of the Week” and “Safe Employee of the Month” combined with our annual Safety Banquet encourages safe practices. The Safety Banquet is concluded each year by presenting the grand prize of $10,000; given to the Superintendent with the best safety performance of the year.

Congratulations to David Mendoza!
2008 Best Safety Record Grand Prize Winner $10,000

Safety at Brazos Masonry embraced many changes in 2009. We constantly monitored hazards and trends to see where changes were needed to head off injuries before they happen. One such hazard that is always present are fall hazards. We work from heights and scaffolds everyday and are working to alleviate the associated dangers. One way we are doing this is by investing in mast climbing scaffolds rather than the traditional frame scaffolds. Mast climbing scaffolds are able to be fully decked and railed at ground level, thereby avoiding the hazards of building the scaffold piece by piece in the air. Another change to avoid fall hazards is requiring all of our employees to wear a safety harness and lanyard at all times. This will enable them to tie off immediately when they need to and not have to retrieve a harness from elsewhere or be tempted not to use one at all. We have also started a program that will help in preventing muscular/skeletal injuries caused by lifting. The 2008 Safety Champion grand prize of $10,000.00 goes to Mr. David Mendoza.

Congratulations to Juan Ramirez!
2009 Best Safety Record Grand Prize Winner $10,000

On January 29, 2010, we celebrated our 3rd annual Safety Banquet. This annual event is for the recognition of safety at BMI and to promote the importance of a safety culture on the job site. The first place winner for the best Incident Rate for 2009 also happened to be our youngest Superintendent. A man not yet thirty years old, Juan Ramirez, took home an award check in the amount of $10,000.00! This night is designed to show how much we really do care about the BMI family and all employees staying healthy. At BMI, safety is the highest priority! We look forward to next year and the opportunity to again reward employees in our effort to consistently deliver a healthy work environment.
